From Tree to Textile: Block Printing from Nature's Motifs
[ A Memorial Weekend All-Inclusive Creative Retreat ]
May 24 - 27, 2019 || $699.00
Just opened up!! 2 budget spots, for those retreating with a smaller budget… and 3 day-student spots. Reserve your space via the linked button below!
Immerse yourself in botanicals, block printing and design in this 4-day slow creative retreat with textile designer Skye McNeill of OROZCO Studio. Block printing is one of the oldest and most accessible forms of print making. It is also one of the slowest, allowing artists time and space to connect with their work.
Using the beautiful grounds of Plum Nelli as our inspiration source, we will observe, sketch and photograph plants, animals and the landscape as it inspires us. We will then transform these motifs into carved rubber blocks and print them onto textile yardage. We'll enjoy a beautiful farm-to-fork meal together each day, and with ample free time after art-making for exploring the hidden gem Marrowstone Island. Paddle-board or kayak in Mystery Bay, go for a sunset walk on the beach, indulge in delicious local cuisine, build new friendships. All while resting each night in our beautiful accommodations.
Join us! Slow down, disconnect, and reconnect with the creativity that resides within...

Schedule of Events
FRDAY, MAY 24 / Intro to Printing & Artist Talk: 4 pm - 7 pm
Arrive at Plum Nelli, and we'll kick off the 4-day event with a welcome celebration! We'll discuss the lineage of block printing in both historical and contemporary contexts, and the evolution of its relationship with textiles. We'll look at sample prints and learn the basics of layout for both spot graphics and repeat patterns. We will also learn some of the challenges and restraints of the medium, and how those can be used to our advantage when planning our designs. Small-bites and libations will be provided.
SATURDAY, MAY 25 - SUNDAY, MAY 26 / 10 am - 4 pm
We will start the day with some time exploring the wild spaces of the farm's acreage and the surrounding island, gathering ideas for shapes, colors, and themes. We will then have a carving demo and time to practice techniques and the different carving tools. After a delicious lunch, students will work on sketching designs and begin carving their blocks. There will be ample time in the afternoon for exploring the island, going for beach or forrest walks, and popping into the Nordland General Store for some local quirk.
On Sunday, we’ll finish up any carving, practice test printing, and begin planning our projects. We'll go over types of ink, application technique and different textiles. Each student will receive a yard of fabric to use as they wish, whether to play with different blocks, create a repeat yardage, or plan a sewn product.
MONDAY, MAY 27 / 10 am - 2 pm
For students who wish to leave with a finished piece, sewing machines and some basic patterns and instruction will be available today. Or, students may choose to carve another design for use in future projects. We'll wrap up our projects and share our work with each other, capping off the event with a delicious and celebratory lunch!
